Amber Valley Market Towns

Known as the heart of Derbyshire, Amber Valley takes its name from the river Amber, which joins the Derwent at Ambergate. A place of peaceful beauty, you will find weathered stone villages dotted between clusters of green landscape. In contrast, this tranquil segment of Derbyshire was once a place of political intrigue, and industrial revolution, and where Florence Nightingale’s commitment to pioneer modern nursing gradually took shape.

Today the estimated population of Amber Valley is 126,500 and benefits from having good transport connections to other parts of the country, being easily accessible from the M1, A38, and the arterial road network.

Amber Valley has a great community spirit, with a wealth of visitor attractions, market towns, and natural scenery. The four main market towns Alfreton, Belper, Heanor, and Ripley offer independent stores, stylish boutiques, and artisan shops alongside the familiar high-street name stores.

Markets are held in Belper every second Saturday (with speciality markets throughout the year), Ripley and Heanor have traditional outdoor markets every Friday and Saturday, and Alfreton boasts the areas only Indoor Market Hall, with an independent outdoor artisan market held on the the last Saturday of the month at Alfreton House.

Alfreton's market charter was granted in 1252 and the town is still well-served by its indoor market hall offering variety and value. The indoor market opens Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 8am until 4pm, with over 20 full time and casual traders. Find market staples such as fruit & veg, bread, cakes, butchers, cards, flowers & plants, as well as wool, bath bombs, crystals & incense, sweets, habberdashery, clothing alterations, jigsaws, 5D diamond art pictures, warhammer, homemade jams & cakes, hand knitted goods, and much more!

There is also a cafe, serving drinks and cakes all day, with hot food available from 8am to 2pm. It has a large seating area both inside and‘outside’, with toilets onsite including a dedicated disabled cubicle & baby change area.
